History of World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day was established in 1992 by the World Federation of Mental Health, under the direction of Richard Hunter, the deputy secretary-general at the time. The world had a host of mental health issues that weren’t properly being treated. There were battles in France to secure public money for treatment, cruel treatment in New Zealand, and a general lack of understanding about the true nature of mental health. The WFMH knew that they needed to act on a global scale to solve a global crisis. A two-hour show was sent worldwide for the first three years using a satellite owned by the United States Information Agency. The studio, which was situated in Tallahassee, Florida, served as a helpful means of spreading their advocacy message throughout the globe. Chile, England, Australia, and Zambia participated, and parts of the program were pre-taped in Geneva, Atlanta, and Mexico City.
In 1994, the theme of the inaugural World Mental Health Day was “Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services throughout the World.” Following the campaign, feedback reports were provided from 27 nations, and national campaigns were held in Australia and England. Maintaining this momentum, WFMH board members planned events around the world in line with the day and its increasing recognition by organizations, government agencies, and the general public.
