Impella Device is the smallest heart pump that is used in different surgeries such as percutaneous coronary interventions and maintains the flow of blood to keep up with heart health. It can also be called a small ventricular assistance device as said by cardiologists. The reason behind calling it an assistance device lies behind the working principle which is, to support the function of the ventricles.
Ventricles are the lower chambers of the heart which pump together to push the blood out of the heart. The pumped-out blood is then supplied to the body parts, this is the usual activity that the heart performs every second. But, during any heart disease, especially, related to the valves, this activity gets hindered.
The upper two chambers of the heart i.e., atria have to pump the blood within the heart, but the ventricles need assistance if they fail to work properly as the blood from the ventricles is supplied to the entire human body. So, the Impella Device can help with the conditions of heart failure where this activity is blocked. And, not just heart failure can lead to inactivity of the chambers, the other diseases can also contribute to the same.

What is an impella Device? How does it work?
The Impella device is placed into the heart guided from the femoral artery up into the heart through a small incision on your upper thigh and placing a fine tube within. Then the device is guided up into the ventricle of the heart to take over its activity. The requirement of the impella depends on the condition and stability of your heart.
Cardiologists use impella devices during other surgeries to allow the ventricle to rest for the meantime as the impella device takes over its function. It is then removed as soon as the PCI is done or is left for some time to allow the chambers of the heart to completely recover from the damage. The impella, till then is monitored. When the heart regains its normal activity is taken out.
The important thing to not forget is that the impella device is used under the guided supervision of an expert and is regulated and monitored by healthcare professionals like Dr. Ravinder Singh Rao. Also, it is a short-term solution till the time your expert finds a remedial solution for your heart’s condition.
Why does a person need an impella device?
The reasons include the following:
Heart failure: The most obvious circumstance, is where the blood is not supplied properly in the human body because of the ‘failure’. Under such circumstances, where surgery is the only option, impella devices are used.
Need for stent or balloons: The stent placement of a balloon is the technique used to expand the contracted blood vessels to regulate the blood back to normal. Sustenance of normal blood flow is the basic requirement of a heart, in cases with ailments, this requirement exceeds the normal, wherein the impella can help.
Heart attack: Cardiac arrest or heart attacks can lead to the requirement of an impella. In cases where the ventricular activity is obstructed, the impella device lets it continue giving rest to the ventricle for repairing itself and healing from the damage.
